How to get internet access in Brazil
Although the number of internet users in Brazil is growing with enormous speed internet penetration is still quite low compared to other countries. A large number of the population located outside the highly populated areas has no access to internet. However, internet technology as such does not fall behind the international level.
The cheapest, and still the most common form of internet access is dial-up which means that the user dials into a fixed phone line. Yet the shift from dial up to broadband services (mainly ADSL) has experienced a major increase and now serves all cities and highly populated areas.
The main internet providers in Brazil are Brasil Telecom , Terra , Pop and UOL .
Subscribe via internet or by calling a service customers number. To apply the CPF (Cadastro de pessoa f'ísica) and the RNE ( Registro Nacional de Estrangeiro) numbers are required.
Apart from telephone companies or direct internet providers, a new trend on the internet market are joint cable TV and broadband packages. This option is cheaper than purchasing each service individually. One of the main cable TV providers offering this service is NET .
Internet cafés and alternatives
Internet cafés provide cheap, yet not widely available, access to the internet for occasional users. An alternative are free internet facilities, which are provided by the government and the municipalities and are situated in urban areas. They are, however, in the first place meant for people who cannot afford internet access, so although it is a very attractive option to start with, try to find an other, long-term solution.
