How to obtain the Luxembourger nationality

Citizenship

Around 1,000 foreigners take Luxembourg nationality each year by one of the two available paths: ‘option’ or naturalisation.

If you’re between the ages of 18 and 25, you can ‘opt’ for nationality if you were born in Luxembourg (and didn’t acquire nationality from one of your parents), completed most of your schooling there or are married to a Luxembourg citizen. You must have resided in Luxembourg for the past five years and agree to renounce your former nationality. To become a citizen by naturalisation, you must be over the age of 18, have lived in the Duchy for at least ten years and agree to renounce your previous nationality. Further information about becoming a citizen of Luxembourg is available from the Ministry of Justice in Luxembourg City ((+352) 478-4545).
