Landlines lag way behind mobiles in the popularity stakes in the Dominican Republic. While there are almost 9 million active mobiles, just over a million households have a fixed-line.

Claro  and Wind  all offer monthly plans with professional installation and good rates for calling abroad. You can choose from either a post-pay billing method or a flat monthly fee, but think carefully about how much you’ll use your phone before committing to the latter. Visit the companies’ websites to request installation.

If you’re from the U.S. bear in mind that most companies have a plan where you can call home at local rates.
