Emergencies and accidents in Romania

Although you will normally not be refused treatment in an emergency, private providers may expect immediate payment for services. Make sure you have appropriate insurance cover and/or membership of the Romanian healthcare system.

EU visitors are covered in emergencies if they hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). In case of an emergency, call 112. Dialing 112 is a fast way to communicate with an emergency dispatch centre in the case of an emergency. This number covers all of the emergency services: police, fire department, and ambulance. You can call 112 from anywhere in Romania and from any phone, fixed or mobile.

In more remote areas in a medical emergency, you may find it a better idea – if possible – to try and find a way of getting to the nearest hospital, doctor or clinic. Response times are not consistent in all places.
