Must have job to rent apartment?

I just heard from a friend in Berlin that for me to rent an apartment there I must have a job there. Does anyone know if this is true. I am moving there in May and have some job prospects but I will not know for sure for a few weeks. If I can't rent an apartment until I get a job then where am I suppose to live? Does this sound right?
